Purpose: In this experimental study, the effect of repetitive local injections of human amniotic fluid on the healing of zygomatic arch osteotomies in 30 New Zealand adult rabbits was investigated.
Method: A complete fracture was surgically created at both zygomatic archs of the rabbits. The fractured right zygomatic archs, received human amniotic fluid, were group I and the fractured left zygomatic archs, received the same amount of saline solution were group II. Injections were repeated once a week until the seventh postoperative week. The rabbits were divided into three groups according to the postoperative biopsy times for histopathological examination. In the first group, biopsies were taken from the fracture sites at two weeks, in the second group at four weeks and in the third group at six weeks after surgical intervention.
Results: The extent of healing process, which was graded according to Allen’s scale, statistically significant increased in osteotomies treated with human amniotic fluid in every steps of evaluation. No evidence of reaction against this fluid was noted.
Conclusion: Our study as a preliminary look shows that repetitive local injections of human amniotic fluid improves the fractured bone healing. The rich content of growth factors and hyaluronic acid may possibly contribute to this result. Keywords: bone healing, human amniotic fluid, growth factor, hyaluronic acid
